According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, detoxification "is the first step in preparing for and engaging in treatment" and "involves bringing someone's body back to a stable, toxin-free state." At Cornell Scott-Hill Health Center, our detoxification program is designed to do just that: help individuals through the process of ridding their bodies of drugs and alcohol, so that they can begin treatment with a clean slate.

Signs Your Loved One Needs Detox Treatment

There are a variety of signs that may indicate that your loved one is in need of detox treatment. Here are some of the most common ones:

They're using more of the substance than they used to.

They're trying to quit but can't seem to stick with it.

They're experiencing withdrawal symptoms when they try to quit.

Their tolerance has increased, meaning they need more of the substance to get the same effect.

They're using the substance in ways that are risky, such as injecting it intravenously.

They're neglecting their responsibilities at home, work, or school.

They're isolating themselves from friends and family.

They're engaging in risky behaviors, such as driving while under the influence.

They're experiencing financial difficulties due to their substance use.

They've been arrested for DUI or other drug-related offenses.

If you see any of these signs in your loved one, it's important to seek professional help as soon as possible. Detox treatment can be very effective in helping people get their lives back on track, but it's important to get started on the road to recovery as soon as possible.

What To Expect

Detoxification usually takes place in an inpatient setting, where patients are closely monitored by medical staff. This is because detox can sometimes be accompanied by withdrawal symptoms that can be uncomfortable and even dangerous. Our team of doctors, nurses, and counselors will work with patients to make sure that they detox safely and as comfortably as possible.

The Detox Process

The first step in detox is an initial assessment, during which our staff will get to know the patient and their specific situation. This will help us to create a customized detox plan that takes into account any unique needs or circumstances.

Next, patients will begin the process of ridding their bodies of drugs and alcohol. This may involve a period of abstinence, followed by the use of medications to help with any withdrawal symptoms.

After detox, patients will be able to move on to the next step in their treatment plan. For some, this may mean beginning an inpatient or outpatient treatment program. Others may choose to go to a sober living facility or start attending recovery meetings. No matter what the next step is, our staff will be there to support and guide patients through the process.
