Nutrition & Wellness in New Haven County

Nutrition is a vital component of overall health and well-being. The food we consume provides the essential nutrients our bodies need to function properly and support various bodily processes. A balanced and nutritious diet can help prevent chronic diseases, maintain a healthy weight, boost the immune system, promote optimal growth and development, and improve mental clarity and mood. At Cornell Scott-Hill Health Center, we are proud to offer individualized nutrition counseling to help people make better dietary choices and manage their chronic medical conditions such as pre-diabetes, diabetes, hypertension and high cholesterol.

Signs You Need Nutrition Counseling

Signs that indicate you may benefit from nutrition counseling include:

Weight Management Challenges. If you're struggling to lose or gain weight, or if your weight fluctuates significantly, nutrition counseling can help you establish a balanced and sustainable approach to reach your goals.

Chronic Health Conditions. If you have a chronic health condition such as obesity, diabetes, prediabetes, high cholesterol, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, or gastrointestinal disorders, nutrition counseling can provide guidance on how to manage your condition through proper dietary choices.

Digestive Issues. If you experience frequent digestive problems, such as bloating, constipation, or diarrhea, a nutrition expert can assess your diet and provide recommendations to improve your digestive health.

Food Allergies or Intolerances. If you have been diagnosed with food allergies or intolerances, a nutrition counselor can assist you in creating a well-balanced meal plan that meets your nutritional needs while avoiding trigger foods.

Disordered Eating Patterns. If you have an unhealthy relationship with food, struggle with emotional eating, or exhibit signs of disordered eating, nutrition counseling can help you develop a healthier mindset and establish nourishing eating habits.

Low Energy Levels and Fatigue. If you frequently feel fatigued or lack energy throughout the day, a nutrition expert can assess your diet to identify potential nutrient deficiencies and provide guidance on improving your energy levels through proper nutrition.

Sports Performance Optimization. If you're an athlete or engage in regular physical activity, nutrition counseling can optimize your performance by developing personalized nutrition strategies to fuel your body effectively and enhance recovery.

Remember, nutrition counseling can be beneficial for anyone seeking to improve their overall well-being through better dietary choices. Consulting with a qualified nutrition professional can provide valuable insights and support in achieving your health and nutrition goals.

Our WIC Services

Understanding the critical role of nutrition in early development, the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) at Cornell Scott-Hill Health Center is a cornerstone of our commitment to nurturing healthier families. WIC is designed to support low-income pregnant, breastfeeding, and non-breastfeeding postpartum women, as well as infants and children up to their 5th birthday. Through WIC, eligible participants receive supplemental foods rich in essential nutrients, personalized nutrition education, breastfeeding support, and referrals for health care and social services. This program not only focuses on the nutritional needs of mothers and young children but also fosters a community of support, empowering families with the knowledge and resources to make informed dietary choices. By integrating WIC services into our broader nutrition and health care offerings, we strive to lay a solid foundation for long-term health and well-being for our community's youngest members and their caregivers.
