When a female turns 40 years old, she is encouraged to begin attending annual mammography appointments. While these appointments have a reputation for not being the most comfortable, it is extremely significant to get evaluated once per year. This is mainly because a mammogram has the power to detect early signs of breast cancer. In fact, research shows that there's a 25% reduction in deaths from breast cancer among women who regularly screen.
Mammography is a practice that utilizes low-energy X-rays in order to detect early signs of breast cancer by screening for possible cancerous lumps. This process also searches for micro calcifications, which can be another symbol of cancer.
A mammography exam is more simple than you think. At Cornell Scott-Hill Health Center, we are proud to provide screenings in a special 3D mammography and breast ultrasound van.
When you arrive, the first thing you do is call the Mobile Van # to complete the check in process. A staff member will call you back and let you know when you are to come into the Van for your screening, and talk with you about the procedure. You will then be prompted to undress your top half, and the nurse will give you a gown to cover up with. After this, you are ready to begin. You will be instructed to put each breasts in between two plastic plates, one at a time, and an X-ray will be taken. This will only last a few seconds, and then you're done! You may experience breast tenderness following the procedure, but this is normal. You can also expect results within the next month!
At Cornell Scott-Hill Health Center, we strive to provide thorough, compassionate, and quality care to all patients, regardless of what service they are receiving. We know how nerve-racking it can be to go to a mammography exam appointment, especially if you have never had one before. That is why our staff always ensures that the patient can ask any questions or voice any concerns before the procedure begins, and that they feel comfortable. If you are looking to schedule your annual mammography appointment, give us a call today.
