Business Leader Len Suzio Named to Cornell Scott-Hill Health Center Foundation Board of Directors

Prominent Connecticut business leader Len Suzio of New Haven has been named to the Board of the Cornell Scott-Hill Health Center (CS-HHC) Foundation. Suzio is President of Suzio York Hill Companies, a third-generation family-owned business that provides stone and concrete products that constitute the substance of buildings, highways, and bridges across the state of Connecticut.
Suzio said he hopes his industry “savvy” and familiarity with Greater New Haven will help Cornell Scott-Hill Health Center grow and thrive. He believes that the vitality of organizations is enhanced by good stewardship, especially of the spaces they occupy and from which they serve their clients.
“Yes, buildings are made of concrete, steel, brick and mortar,” he said. “We must, however, make sure our neighbors in need are served in sites that are well built, well maintained, safe, and welcoming.”
Len Suzio will be a tremendous addition to our Board,” said Board Chair LindyLee Gold, “and we are thrilled that he has chosen to actively support our work advocating for CS-HHC. His business expertise and commitment to community well-being have earned the respect of people throughout our state, and he will be a significant resource as we navigate the road ahead in support of the mission of Cornell Scott-Hill Health Center.”
The CS-HHC Foundation, established last year, includes leaders from throughout Greater New Haven. The Board is led by Chair LindyLee Gold, Senior Specialist, State of Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development; and President Michael R. Taylor, the CEO of CS-HHC. Board members include Paul McCraven, Chief Operating Officer of ConnCORP; Gladys Soto, President and CEO of Sunset Shores, Inc.; Joshua Bird, MBA, Chief Financial Officer of the Housing Authority of the City of Hartford; and Andrea Lobo, Cornell Scott-Hill Health Center Chief Human Resources Officer.
The establishment of the Cornell Scott-Hill Health Center Foundation last fall came as public interest in supporting the range of health care services being provided has been steadily growing - particularly during the pandemic - recognizing the escalating need in New Haven and throughout the region. CS-HHC has more than doubled in size over the past several years and now serves more than 55,000 people annually. The number of patient visits in 2022 exceeded 300,000.
“We are very grateful for Len’s commitment to serving the community and CS-HHC, and we recognize the enormous respect he has earned through the years,” said Taylor. “We know that he will help us to respond to the escalating need for quality health care services,” noted Taylor, ”which includes medical, behavioral health, dental and pediatric services. I am energized by the role that Len and his colleagues on the Foundation Board will play in support of our efforts.”
Suzio York Hill is widely recognized as an industry leader in Connecticut, providing a range of materials tailored to the specifications of the job: crushed stone for various construction purposes; bituminous concrete for paving projects that range from residential driveways to major interstate highways; and the different strengths of ready-mix concrete used in highways, bridges, residential and commercial buildings. The company was founded by Suzio’s grandfather, Leonardo Suzio, for whom he was named.
Suzio also serves on the Board of The Shubert New Haven (CAPA), having previously served as Board Chair. He also is on the Goodspeed Musicals Board, chairing its Facilities Committee, and the Board of Connecticut Landmarks, a network of 11 historic state properties. Len Suzio was born and brought up in Meriden. After graduating from St. Paul Catholic High School in Bristol, Suzio earned his bachelor’s degree in English Literature from Georgetown University, Washington, D.C.
CS-HHC is among the nation’s leading community health centers, ranked in the top 3% in the United States. CS-HHC provides health care services to residents of New Haven, West Haven and towns in the Lower Naugatuck Valley - Ansonia, Seymour, Shelton, Naugatuck, and Oxford – with 27 clinics and school-based health centers in the region.
The first community health center in Connecticut, established in 1968, CS-HHC celebrates “55 years of health equity in action” in 2023. It is a proud history of comprehensive primary care, accessible to all, guided by the transformative values of Compassion, Diversity, Respect, Accountability, Integrity, and Excellence. The 55th Anniversary will be celebrated this fall, with a special community-wide event in support of CS-HHC to be held on September 21 at the New Haven Lawn Club.
CS-HHC began construction last fall of a Recovery & Wellness Center which will offer a safe, short-term therapeutic living environment and outpatient services for people in treatment for substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health illnesses so they can become stable in their recovery. When it opens early next year, it will be among the largest in South Central Connecticut, and part of a comprehensive CS-HHC campus in New Haven.
CS-HHC is a Joint Commission accredited institution, accountable to the highest standards and best practices in safe and effective care, providing state-of-the-art, integrated care with a clear mission: “To measurably improve the health and well-being of the communities they serve by providing excellent and compassionate care, accessible to all.” The mission of the Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, is “To support Cornell Scott-Hill Health Center in promoting the health and well-being of the communities it serves.”
