New Haven, Conn. – The one-year grant Cornell Scott-Hill Health Center (CS-HHC) was awarded by the Federal Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) in May 2022 enabled CS-HHC’s Family Planning Services program to enhance direct-to-consumer telehealth for low-income women covered by DHHS’Title X Family Planning program

Specifically, the grant allowed CS-HHC to broaden Title X patients’ access to family planning care by combining its “synchronous” telehealth care (live, face-to-face visits with providers via phone or video) with “asynchronous” telehealth care (on-demand, multilingual experiences via voice, text, chat, and other communication mediums).

The innovative asynchronous element includes 16 five- to seven-minute videos on four topics in four languages spoken by many CS-HHC patients: English; Spanish; Arabic; and Pashto, common to Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Iran. The videos address the availability and importance of Title X services, family planning, emergency contraception, and reversible contraceptives.

The videos, now “live” on CS-HHC’s website (www.cornellscott.org), are advertised on buses; in digital streaming, and social media; and on printed marketing materials distributed within the CS-HHC service area and community partner locations. They also are advertised within CS-HHC primary care locations where women’s health services are provided. Those offices are located in Greater New Haven, West Haven, and Ansonia. This broad-based advertising of and local access to the videos ensure that women within those communities and beyond can fully benefit from the education and awareness they provide.

Established in 1970, Title X is a government program that helps provide free family planning services to low-income women and men.

“As the first Federally Qualified Health Center in Connecticut, we recently celebrated our 55th year of Health Care in Action. We’re dedicated to the principle of health equity for all and to overcoming the barriers so many of our clients face when seeking quality, affordable health care. This grant helps us to provide comprehensive reproductive and family planning services to our low-income patients,” stated Michael R. Taylor, CS-HHC CEO.
