The Cornell Scott-Hill Health Center (CS-HHC) announced that it administered its first doses of the newly-approved Johnson & Johnson (J&J) vaccine to close to 100 homeless members of the New Haven community.
“We are including the new J&J vaccine as an option as part of our accelerated response to the COVID-19 crisis,” said CEO Michael Taylor. “We are excited that we are among the first providers in the state to move quickly to make the new J&J vaccine available to as many people as possible in the communities we serve.
The health center introduced the Johnson and Johnson vaccine, which requires one shot instead of two, as an option to clients at the Columbus House, a homeless shelter in New Haven. The J&J vaccine supplements the Moderna vaccine, which the health center has been administering since late December. Cornell Scott-Hill staff are offering multiple vaccine events in the coming weeks for educators, childcare providers and the public. In addition, the health center has vaccination clinics set up on Columbus Avenue and Dixwell Avenue in New Haven and on Putnam Avenue in Hamden.
Emphasizing the importance of vaccination in general, Chief Medical Officer Dr. Mark Silvestri said, “We are pleased to be able to offer people an additional vaccine choice. We encourage everyone to get vaccinated as soon as they’re eligible. Both Moderna and J&J are effective vaccines to prevent serious illness and other dire consequences of the COVID-19 virus.”
Highlighting the health center’s commitment to ensuring every member of the communities it serves has access to the same quality health care options, Taylor said, “We will continue to provide vaccine services at churches, schools and community centers across the city, while also offering diagnostic and vaccine services at our clinic locations throughout greater New Haven.”
